Dean Brothers Run Riot

Today, Jono and Blake Dean set a mammoth amount of records in the ACT 1st Grade Semi Final for Weston Creek Molonglo against Queanbeyan. Weston Creek finally declared at 9-668 after Blake Dean batting at number eight in the innings was dismissed for 291. Earlier in the day, Jono Dean was dismissed for 205.

Comets in the Futures League – An Analysis

This is a short analysis of the Comets (both the ACT up to 2016/17 and ACT/NSW Country) in the Futures League and previously the Cricket Australia Cup.

This refers to only the 3-day and 4-day versions of the competition and doesn’t include the Futures League T20 competition (often referred to as the Baby Bash).

The analysis currently goes back to the 2006/07 season.

This table shows the percentage of players and their location when playing for the ACT and ACT/NSW Country Comets. When Brad Haddin and David Dawson played for the ACT during this time they are considered as Ex-ACT players as they previously played Grade cricket in Canberra.

Grade players refers to players who were currently playing Grade cricket in Canberra at the time they were picked to play for the Comets during that season.

Ex-ACT refers to players who had previously played in Grade cricket in Canberra but were then picked to play for the Comets in that season. Players were playing either in the Adelaide or Sydney grade competitions.

Country refers to players selected who were playing in grade cricket competitions in country New South Wales. Currently this has only been the Newcastle grade competition.

NSW refers to players selected to play for the Comets but have no connection to cricket in Canberra other than playing for the Comets. Players started playing for the Comets from the 2014/15 season under the Memorandum of Understanding between Cricket ACT and Cricket NSW. From the 2017/18 season, the Comets name was changed from ACT to ACT/NSW Country and contained NSW contracted players who had a link to NSW Country areas.

Matches refer to the number of selections for the season. In this case. Some seasons, 4 matches were played while some seasons 6 matches were played.

From 2006/07 to 2008/09, the Comets finished 6th in each season. In each of these seasons, all of the players were ACT Grade players or Ex-ACT players from interstate grade competitions. These were generally one to three players in total each season.

2009/10 to 2013/14 saw grade players from the Newcastle grade competition playing in the side. This has generally been the most successful time in the competition, finishing 3rd in 2009/10, 4th in 2012/13 and winning the competition in 2010/11. The percentage of grade players reached a maximum in 2013/14 where 94% of selections were ACT grade players.

From 2014/15 to 2017/18 saw a memorandum of understanding between Cricket NSW and Cricket ACT which ultimately saw the renaming of the Comets from ACT to ACT/NSW Country. This period saw no players from NSW Country grade competitions selected in the side and the number of selections with no background in Canberra cricket rising from 20% in 2015/16 to 51% in 2017/18. The percentage of selections from ACT grade cricket reached an all time low of 22% in 2017/18. When the memorandum of understanding came into effect in 2014/15, the percentage of selections from ACT grade cricket dropped from 94% in 2013/14 to 42% in 2014/15. In each of the seasons from 2014/15 to currently in 2017/18, the finishing position of the Comets has been last place.
